Training Facilities

Norton Grange is steeped in racing history and was established by the late Jimmy Fitzgerald in the late 1970's. Winners such as 1985 Cheltenham Gold cup hero Forgive n Forget, dual Scottish National winner Androma were produced into the winners enclosure from Norton Grange.
However, the Norton Grange facilities have not only trained winners up the famous  stamina sapping Cheltenham hill but speed specialists from the flat have also flowed from the premises including St Leger runner up and Princess Of Wales Stakes victor Sapience and classy performers such as Trainglot and Symonds Inn.

Tim Pitt Racing is based at The Lower Yard and our facilities include 29 boxes in a self contained unit including a horse walker as well as feed and tack stores.

The famous Highfield gallops is the jewel in the crown of the numerous facilities that are available to us and is only a ten minute ride away. These gallops were initially constructed as a racecourse in 1882 and the old weighing room is the only reminder of days gone by. The quality aged turf and well drained soil provide an ideal environment to produce winners, both over jumps and on the flat.

As well as the turf gallops, several all weather gallops also compliment the facilities including a mile woodchip gallop that's just over a mile long, and a one mile sand and rubber gallop, which is used for warming up. There are also plenty of paths and tracks to provide horses with an ever changing scenery.

The facilities at Norton grange also include a large indoor barn which is ideal in bad weather, a selection of walkways and trotting paths, turn out paddocks and a three and a half furlong round sand gallop.

Captain Charles Elsey stamped Highfield gallops on the training map as he was champion trainer in 1956 and topped this list a further eight times. The following Group 1 winners were all conditioned on the Highfield Turf :

1952FriezeEpsom Oaks
1953Nearula  2000 Guineas & Champion Stakes
1956Honeylight   1000 Guineas
1958Billum  Dewhurst Stakes
1959CanteloSt Leger

In the late sixties Bill Elsey continued the family tradition training Pia to win the Oaks in 1967 and Peleid to win the St Leger in 1973. Presently a select successful band of modern day trainers including Tim Pitt, Tim Fitzgerald, Ollie Pears and John Quinn use the expanse of gallops that make up Highfield.
